What is Social Erasmus?
ISN Amsterdam is set on giving international students the chance to get to know their new environment. One way in which we encourage integration into the Dutch society is by or- ganizing SocialErasmus events. These volunteering activities with local non-profit organiza- tions allow international students to get to know a different side of Amsterdam while, at the same, giving back to the community.
Activities vary from an afternoon in an elderly home playing games or making art to spending a day with refugee children or lending a hand in social restaurant making and serving fair priced meals. SocialErasmus is a unique way of meeting new people and discovering new places and will enrich your exchange semester. We will post about the volunteering activities on our Facebook page ‘ISN Amsterdam SocialErasmus’, so be sure to join that group! You can mark the 29th of September in your agendas for our first SocialErasmus volunteering activity!
What is Erasmus in Schools?
Another kind of volunteering we offer is Erasmus in Schools. Together with an ISN board or committee member you and your fellow international students will visit a high school in Amsterdam where you will be able to interact with the students and talk about your country, culture and the cultural differences you have encountered so far. You can also be an inspiration to these students whom most of the time haven’t seen as much of the world as you have. As you have come from far to study in Amsterdam, you know what it is like to pursue your dreams. You will be able to help these students think about their futures – who do they want to become and what are their passions and goals?
Anyone who is enthusiastic about this volunteering project, open to other cultures and is not afraid to take initiative in talking to Dutch high school students is welcome to join these activities! For some events at the high school, however, a specific language is required, but this will be communicated. Erasmus in Schools activities will also be posted in our ‘ISN Amsterdam SocialErasmus’ Facebook group.
